Winterizing summer cars well

Winter is coming! Owners of classic cars or convertibles send their cars into hibernation before the first frost at the latest, because salt on the roads is a no-go for these much-loved vehicles. However, there are a few things to consider to ensure that the car “winters” properly. In addition to proper care and maintenance, a good indoor climate at the winter location is essential. Two out of three classic car insurance policies require a roof over the classic car – a hall, barn, carport or garage. Ideally, however, the room should be frost-proof and well ventilated and the humidity should be below 50 percent. And this is where garages, especially modern prefabricated concrete garages, clearly have the edge.

If winter storage is poorly ventilated, the risk of rust and corrosion increases. Moisture could lead to mildew or mold stains in the vehicle interior. Frost is also not advisable for the car battery. A horror scenario for car enthusiasts.

A prefabricated concrete garage is ideal for a good indoor climate, as concrete has a balancing effect on the temperature: Not too cold in winter, not too hot in summer. The concrete absorbs the cool outside air and only slowly releases it into the environment. In this way, the temperature inside does not fall below freezing. Concrete also has a regulating effect on humidity. This not only provides the best climate conditions for classic cars, but the prefabricated concrete garage also offers normal garage parkers advantages in winter: The car is protected from ice and snow – no more annoying ice scraping before driving off.

If the car is parked for longer periods, regular ventilation is essential. Leave the door open? Better not, as this makes it easy for martens and mice to get in – not to mention theft or vandalism.

ZAPF GmbH, the leading manufacturer of prefabricated concrete garages, therefore advises customers to use a sectional door. An up-and-over door can only be opened completely, whereas the sectional door is brought into the so-called ventilation position – manually, by hand-held transmitter or via app. In this way, only the top section opens, while the door at the bottom opens only minimally or even remains completely closed in the case of the Premium sectional door. In this way, the garage is supplied with fresh air and is still optimally protected from uninvited guests and, of course, the weather.

Speaking of weathering: In contrast to other building materials, concrete requires little maintenance or cleaning and is particularly durable. A prefabricated concrete garage can be used for several decades, making it the ideal location for storing more than just classic cars and the like.
