As different as Germany’s federal states are, as different are the regionally preferred garages. In fact, there are understandable and very good reasons for this!
The two main reasons why Germany’s garage landscape differs quite significantly from region to region are the very different settlement structures in Germany and the widely varying land prices.
Wide garages more likely in the territorial states
As a result of the two components mentioned above, a disproportionately high number of wide garages or large garages with garage widths of up to 7 m are being built in the rural regions of Germany, e.g. in Bavaria, with large (because cheaper) plots of land and more spacious driveways. Narrow garages more likely in densely populated areas
Conversely, in densely populated areas – e.g. in central NRW – with scarce land reserves, narrow (because often relatively expensive) and densely developed plots, classic garages with standard widths of 3 to 3.45 m are still preferred.
Amazing but true: narrow garages can have similar floor areas to large garages!
The fact is: Just because garages in central NRW (or similarly structured regions) are often relatively narrow, this in no way means that they have to be smaller. In fact, the garage area in these regions is often enlarged by particularly long garages (up to 7.50 m) and/or by longitudinally attached
