“Sustainable” garage renovation?

The topic of “sustainability” is currently on everyone’s lips for good reason. After all, we only have this one world and are therefore well advised to treat our natural resources with care. Especially when it comes to real estate. And not just for large properties but also for smaller buildings such as garages. Garages can also be produced sustainably – and renovated sustainably.

 

The decisive factor for the sustainability of a garage renovation is what is renovated, how it is renovated, and how durable it is!

 

Ultimately, the renovation is ‘sustainable’ because the renovated garage can be used for as long as possible afterward without having to be renovated again soon. This significantly reduces the use of energy, labor, and materials – which directly benefits resource conservation and therefore the environment—and also reduces the carbon footprint in the long term.

 

1. Have the garage renovated by specialists using suitable materials!

The basic prerequisite for the most sustainable renovation possible is that it is ideally carried out by specialists with the necessary specialist knowledge and using high-quality materials. Otherwise, the unprofessionally sealed garage roof or the amateurishly repaired garage floor damage may have to be repaired again after a short time!

2. Das Garagendach professionell abdichten lassen – oder gleich ein Pultdach aufsetzen lassen!

In vielen Fällen ist es sehr häufig ein undicht werdendes Dach, das nach relativ kurzer Zeit eine neuerliche Renovierung notwendig macht (mit entsprechendem Energie- und Materialeinsatz und daraus sich ergebenden Umweltbelastungen). Wer dies verhindern möchte, sollte unbedingt auf die sorgfältige Ausführung der Dachabdichtung (Erfahrung der Ausführenden, gewähltes Material …) achten. Oder eventuell gleich ein sogenanntes Pultdach aus dauerhaltbarem (weil spezialbeschichtetem) Stahl aufsetzen lassen. Damit wird ein Garagendach in der Tat viele, viele Jahre lang dicht – und muss also nicht immer wieder saniert werden!

3. Protect the garage from mold in the long term

In practice, it has been shown time and again that one of the most common causes of unsustainable garage renovations is that the garage shows mildew stains (again) after a very short time or is infested with mold. But this can be prevented!

 

Either (provided the roof is tight and no moisture can seep in) by regular manual ventilation. Or by either installing a so-called eco-garage ventilator during renovation (which ensures regular air exchange without electricity, simply driven by the wind) or by installing a premium sectional door where the top section of the door can be opened for ventilation without uninvited visitors gaining access to the garage.

4. Protect the side walls of the garage from soiling and streaking by applying a so-called “roof edge design.”

Another valuable insight from garage renovation practice is that many garages have to be renovated again and again (and at relatively short notice) because the outer side walls always become unsightly after a few years. The reason for this is often that precipitation flows down the side walls of the garage directly from the edge of the garage roof, causing dark mold, moss, lichen, or mildew stains to form. But that doesn’t have to be the case! If so-called roof edge design elements are installed on the edge of the garage roof, the rainwater hitting the edge of the roof can no longer flow down the wall from above – the dark stains are prevented in the long term. And the date for the next renovation can be postponed considerably.

As you can see, the durability of a garage renovation can certainly be optimized with suitable measures. The next refurbishment date can be postponed significantly into the future, and the sustainability of the refurbishment can therefore be increased considerably!
