Sheet steel garage versus prefabricated concrete garage

You should definitely know this before making your final purchase decision…

It is obvious to most experts that the structure of a prefabricated concrete garage has advantages in terms of durability compared to a sheet steel garage, and this is due to the fact that concrete is extremely resistant and – unlike metal – cannot rust itself. Some Roman buildings still exist today that were made of a type of concrete almost 2000 years ago! Whether the basic structure of a sheet steel garage will still exist in a few thousand years, on the other hand, is rather doubtful…

Important: The garage price ALWAYS depends on the material quality!

Proponents of sheet steel garages counter the durability argument with the fact that “sheet steel garages are usually a little cheaper”. Which is generally true. However, the price of a sheet steel garage also depends on the material quality and, in particular, on how well the sheets used are protected against corrosion – i.e. how well the galvanizing or surface coating has been applied. High-quality galvanized or coated steel sheets also come at a price – so the cost advantage of a sheet steel garage over a solid prefabricated concrete garage quickly melts away as soon as it is a high-quality garage!

In addition, the purchase price of a garage should not be the only purchase criterion!

In fact, there are other criteria to consider, some of which are not so much in the focus of the market, but which can also be very important.

Among other things, it is also advisable to consider the following criteria when selecting a garage model:

  • Resistance to severe storms and natural disasters: A prefabricated concrete garage weighs several tons and, as a self-contained structure, can withstand even the most severe natural influences.
  • Resistance to theft and vandalism: The solidity of a prefabricated concrete garage also makes it extremely difficult for thieves and other unwelcome intruders to break into a prefabricated concrete garage.
  • Interior temperature of the garage: A solid prefabricated concrete garage buffers extreme temperatures much more than a sheet steel garage can. Especially in the increasingly hot German midsummer, this can be a relevant difference in comfort!
  • Condensation/condensation water problem: Particularly in cheaply constructed sheet steel garages (with inadequate ventilation technology), there may be increased condensation on the interior ceiling and interior walls – which in turn can increase the tendency of the garage walls to corrode, as well as the car parked inside.
  • Possibility of flush-mounted installations: Power cables to interior garage lights, sockets and/or door drive modules can be perfectly concealed in a prefabricated concrete garage prepared for this purpose. This cannot be implemented in the same way in a sheet steel garage!
  • Possibility of backfilling with soil: Backfilling with soil (e.g. on a slope ) is generally not a problem with a suitably prepared prefabricated concrete garage – but almost impossible with a sheet steel garage.
  • Garage roof load: It is also worth taking a look at the so-called “roof load” of the garage, especially in regions with high levels of precipitation and/or snow. This is significantly higher for prefabricated concrete garages per se (with sheet steel garages, it is sometimes not even possible to walk on the roof for a secured routine inspection) – and if desired, ZAPF garages can also be equipped so that the roof (with appropriate protection) can be used and walked on as a terrace!

To dispel another widespread prejudice…

Which type of garage is more beautiful…?

This is probably a matter of great debate. The fact is that the selection of prefabricated concrete garages from a renowned supplier such as ZAPF is huge – and in principle, every prospective buyer should be able to find a garage that they like!
