Retrofitting an electric garage door opener: Is that possible? Especially now, when it’s icy, wet, and dark, it would be super convenient not to have to get out of the car to open or close the old garage door…
In fact, an electric garage door opener not only increases the convenience of the garage but also enhances security: after all, it eliminates the phase in which you have to walk to the garage door in the rain, snow, and/or darkness to open or close it, leaving you defenseless against possible attacks.
In this respect, the desire of many old garage owners who – like many new garage owners – would like to equip or retrofit their old garage with an electric garage door opener is perfectly understandable. The question arises: Is this possible?
The ZAPF colleagues in the garage modernization department can retrofit the vast majority of old garages – either as part of a complete garage refurbishment or as part of an individual project – with a remote-controlled electric garage door opener.

Existing power connection The most important prerequisite for installing an electric door opener in an old garage is a power connection in the garage or nearby. In most cases, however, this is not a problem, as many garages already have a power supply – or the cable routing runs very close by.
Replacing the garage door When retrofitting an electric door operator, it is usually necessary or expedient to replace the existing garage door. This is because the operator must be specially adapted to the door. This replacement offers the opportunity to replace your old door with a new, more modern, and safer model.

Before you decide to retrofit, you should consider whether an up-and-over door or a sectional door is better suited to your needs. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of both options:
If you opt for a sectional door, you should also consider the premium sectional door. This door not only offers maximum convenience, but also innovative functions – such as a special ventilation tilt position. This allows you to ventilate your garage without opening the door completely – which is particularly useful in the transitional seasons.
