Is your garage ready for the warm and humid season?

The temperatures are slowly climbing upwards. But is your old garage ready for the coming season? Take the test.

Even though we live in Central Europe and not in the tropics, even German summer rains or thunderstorms can have relatively large amounts of precipitation, so that a lot of moisture is brought into the garage by the vehicle driving in. Garages should therefore be aired occasionally, even in the warm season (especially during periods of heavy rainfall) – puddles of dripping water in the garage should not be a permanent condition. If water remains in the garage, this can have negative consequences for the building structure and the vehicle housed in it!

What are the signs that the garage is not properly ventilated?

  • Odor: Does it smell musty in the garage?
  • Plaster: Is there any flaking on the garage walls?
  • Cracks: Are small cracks already visible in the corners?
  • Garage roof: Is it dripping through the ceiling?
  • Mold: Have dark mildew stains or mold already formed?

If you have a moisture meter, you can also use it to determine the indoor climate in the garage. If the humidity value is permanently too high, moisture damage can occur.

What are the consequences of too much moisture in the garage?

If you notice that your garage is poorly ventilated and has become damp, it is best to call in a garage expert to prevent more serious damage to the garage. Possible effects of excessive moisture are:

  • Mold infestation: A common consequence of a poor indoor climate is mold growth on the garage walls. Mold spores spread through the air and can therefore enter a garage at any time. Mold spores can also enter the garage via leaves that are carried into the garage. The mold spores then settle in damp areas and spread. The mold can lead to serious damage.
  • Corrosion damage: Excessive moisture leads to corrosion of metal, meaning that cars, lawnmowers, bicycles and garden tools can start to rust. In the long term, this can lead to damage that requires costly repairs.

How can the humidity in the garage be reduced?

The first step is to find the cause of the high humidity in the garage. If it is due to a defective garage roof, a comprehensive renovation is absolutely necessary. There are two options for this:

  • Classic roof renovation: The old garage roof is made fit again with new waterproofing!
  • Pitched roof solution: With the pitched roof installation, the roof is sealed again and the garage is also aesthetically enhanced.
However, if the high humidity is not caused by such serious defects in the garage, but is the result of poor ventilation, the following products will help in the long term and sustainably:
  • Eco garage ventilator: The eco garage ventilator consists of a stainless steel construction with a louvred hood that uses wind power to transport the “bad” air outside and fresh air into the garage. The regular circulation thus ensures an optimum indoor climate in the garage. The eco garage ventilator is retrofitted to the garage roof.
  • Premium sectional door: The ZAPF Premium sectional door enables better ventilation thanks to the option of a special ventilation position in the upper door area, in which the garage door remains closed at the same time – i.e. no unauthorized person has access to the garage.
