A garage renovated from the ground up is actually just as durable (again) as a completely new garage!
Some garage owners might assume that a new garage is substantially better than a renovated garage. But that’s not true… because a professionally renovated old garage is on a par with a new garage in terms of material structure and looks practically the same as a new garage.
That’s why there’s a lot to be said for renovating the old garage instead of buying a new one.

Advantages of a garage renovation:
- Renovating an old garage is (with very few exceptions) always cheaper than buying a new one.
- Technical innovations such as an electric garage door opener can also be installed in outdated garages.
- Detailed renovation and modernization measures, such as door replacement, have a huge visual impact on an old garage and positively change the entire appearance.
- A garage renovation generally involves far fewer circumstances than the demolition of the old garage and the subsequent installation of a new garage.
- After the comprehensive renovation, the garage is fit for another garage life. Take the entrance threshold, for example: after 15 – 20 years of use, this is very often severely damaged – but after a repair with special fiber-reinforced concrete, it is at least as durable as when it was delivered!
Only in very few, very special cases is the purchase of a new garage a sensible alternative…
Advantages of a new garage (as a replacement for an old garage):
- If a new, particularly large car (e.g. a large SUV) or a motorhome is to be accommodated in an old, small garage, it is worth installing a new, extra high or wide garage – after all, not every (old) standard garage can accommodate such a special vehicle!
- If a garage is so badly damaged that it is actually in danger of collapsing (e.g. because a brick garage was built unprofessionally), renovation can be very costly – in this case, it may actually make sense to look for an alternative new garage, e.g. a prefabricated concrete garage from ZAPF.
Basically, most garages are still in such good condition after 15 to 20 years that there is rarely any really serious damage. And existing defects can be repaired quickly, i.e. within 2 – 3 days, as part of a professional renovation. Afterwards, the garage not only looks like new again – it is also just as stable, weatherproof and attractive as a new garage. And modern comfort features can be retrofitted at the same time!
To test the condition of your own garage, we at ZAPF have developed a free garage check that can be used at any time on our ZAPF website.
