Carrying out a façade renovation in the event of wall damage

In almost all cases, wall damage requires façade restoration. With this type of serious damage, house and apartment owners cannot avoid extensive refurbishment. Depending on the severity or size of the damage, the requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) must also be observed. As a result of this regulation, it is often necessary to insulate the entire façade.

Facade renovation and facade refurbishment

In the case of wall damage, either a facade restoration or a facade renovation can be carried out. The decision as to which method is ultimately used depends on the extent of the damage. While renovation is usually limited to the appearance, it is carried out on intact facades. On the other hand, a facade renovation must be carried out if the damage to the masonry is so severe that the plaster is crumbling away or cracks are visible.

Facade renovation, even for experienced DIY enthusiasts

A façade renovation in the event of wall damage does not necessarily have to be carried out by a professional. Any DIY enthusiast can carry out minor damage and painting work themselves. However, before the first restoration measures are initiated, the condition of the façade should be carefully examined. The extent of the damage can be determined by an inspection, and, if necessary, a professional craftsman can be called in. The more serious the extent of the damage, the more likely it is that restoration work will be carried out by a professional, as certain specifications must be adhered to and tools specifically designed for restoration work will be required.

Check damage carefully

To carry out masonry restoration, the extent of the damage must be precisely determined. First, the façade is carefully tapped to check for possible cavities. However, façades with ETICS panels generally have a hollow sound, meaning that cavities are unlikely to form behind the render. The load-bearing capacity of the render, on the other hand, can be easily determined with an adhesive tape test. This involves pressing a long piece of strongly adhesive tape onto any part of the façade and immediately pulling it off again with a jerk. If paint residue is visible on the adhesive tape, a primer must be applied before painting. However, the façade renovation can be carried out without any problems. However, if larger pieces of the façade remain stuck to the adhesive tape, a complete façade restoration must be carried out.
