The number of lovingly-owned vehicles in Germany is rising steadily – but most of them are still (!) stored in normal garages. That could change…
Germany is a country of car enthusiasts. Germans are particularly fond of the design of older cars: between 2008 and 2017 alone, the number of H-plate vehicles, i.e. classic cars that must be at least 30 years old, rose from 164,225 to 422,213! The fact that the trend is also moving towards more unusual designs, regardless of the increasing number of classic cars, is demonstrated by the success of SUVs, which are much more visually striking than classic saloons and estate cars – especially in the medium and small car size classes. Despite this, most of these four-wheeled design icons are currently still housed in standard garages. The high standards in car design have not yet (!) reached the design of the garage. Things are very different in other countries!

The fact is that there has been a clear trend towards more design-oriented garages, especially for classic and collector’s cars, in Japan – and to some extent also in the USA – for some time now. In fact, there has even been a special magazine in Japan for many years that deals exclusively with unusual garages and the collector’s vehicles parked in them. “Garage Life” – as the magazine is called – is by no means printed in just a few hundred copies. According to expert estimates, the magazine has a circulation of up to 20,000 copies!
It is not yet clear whether this trend will spread to Central Europe to such an extent.
