Defective turf springs – what to do?

Repairing a defective garage door spring

Up-and-over garage doors usually have spiral tension springs, which are tensioned when the door is closed. This means that the springs are always under enormous tension, as the door is closed by default. As soon as the door is opened by hand or using an electric door operator, the steel in the springs is worn down, meaning that the springs can break after a while. The springs usually break at the two semicircular hooks, which can create a dangerous situation. However, the broken springs can be replaced so that it is not necessary to replace the entire door.

Always replace both springs

If there is a defective or broken spring, not only the spring but also the opposite, still intact spring must be replaced. If a single spring is therefore broken, both springs must always be replaced. As the replacement of a single spring can lead to differences in tension, a difference in tension can only be avoided if both springs are in the same state of use. Replacing both springs can also prevent distortion of the door leaf, which is often made of sheet steel with beading.

Setting the door operation

If the spring is broken, door operation should be stopped as soon as possible, or the door should only be opened infrequently. This is particularly important for doors with an electric door operator. If a spring is missing, the motor bears the main load when the door is raised and lowered, meaning that a defect in the operator will become noticeable after a short time.

Have new springs fitted by a specialist

As there is a high risk of injury for inexperienced people due to the enormous tension of the springs, new springs should be fitted by a specialist such as a locksmith. To be on the safe side, a steel cable should also be passed through the spring and firmly anchored in the masonry. If a spring should break, the individual parts cannot scatter.

Get new springs yourself

Many garage door suppliers often offer spare parts for their doors. However, if it is an older door, for example, one that is 30 years old, original replacement springs are often not available. Since you cannot use an unknown spring, you should first look at the colored marking on the upper hook of the springs. Suitable replacement springs can be purchased using this color marking. Otherwise, the spring must be measured, and a replacement found based on its dimensions.
