The topics of sustainability, climate protection, and ecological building have long since become part of everyday life. Anyone building or renovating today is not only thinking about appearance and function but also about the environmental balance. This also increasingly applies to an often underestimated building element: the garage.
Prefabricated garages, especially those made of concrete, now offer many opportunities to become more climate-friendly – from production to use. In this article, we show what this looks like in concrete terms, what you can look out for as a builder and what practical tips there are for a greener garage.
Instead of fresh gravel and sand, many manufacturers are now using RC concrete (recycled concrete), which consists of processed construction waste. This not only reduces the need for natural resources but also lowers CO₂ emissions during concrete production.
Modern prefabricated garages are industrially prefabricated in factory halls, which makes energy requirements easier to calculate and more efficient than an on-site construction site. Many suppliers now rely on energy-saving processes and green electricity in production.
A green garage roof is much more than just an eye-catcher. It acts like a natural air conditioning system, binds fine dust, promotes biodiversity, and even helps to better absorb heavy rainfall events.
Cooling effect: Especially in summer, a green roof significantly reduces the surface temperature of the garage – an advantage for the indoor climate inside.
Protection against extreme weather: the plant layer absorbs rainwater and slowly releases it again. This relieves the sewer system and protects against flooding.
Longer service life: The greening protects the roof waterproofing from UV radiation and temperature fluctuations – this considerably extends the durability of the roof cladding.
More habitat: insects, bees, and birds find valuable nesting and feeding places here – an active contribution to the preservation of biodiversity.

Extensive green roofs are possible on most flat roofs of prefabricated garages if:
The load-bearing capacity is sufficiently dimensioned (usually approx. 80-150 kg/m²).
A professional layer construction with drainage, a filter layer, substrate, and planting is carried out.
The roof waterproofing is root-resistant to prevent long-term damage.
In many cities and municipalities, the installation of green roofs is financially supported – either via municipal subsidies or via funding programs for rainwater management. So it’s worth taking a look at your local building authority!
