The problem of condensation in old garages

Particularly in the cold months, moisture occasionally forms on the walls of garages, which not only damages the fabric of the building, but also the vehicle itself.

The cause lies in the temperature difference between the vehicle and the outside temperature. When the car is parked, it has an operating temperature of up to 90 degrees Celsius, at least in the engine area, while the surrounding space in the garage is cool and dry.

As a result, the interior temperature of the garage quickly rises by several degrees. The warm air absorbs significantly more moisture, which is then released back into the environment.

The warm and humid air cools down and the water settles on the walls and ceiling. This process can be recognized by the formation of drops on the ceiling. If additional moisture is brought into the garage, e.g. in the form of snow, this effect is intensified.

Modern garages can be equipped with special ventilation elements that help to get the condensation problem under control – but what can old garage owners do?

The simplest solution is to bring as little moisture as possible into the old garage and to ventilate the old garage regularly. Moisture ingress can be reduced, for example, by thoroughly removing snow and ice from the vehicle to be parked there before driving in. It is also important to ventilate thoroughly – in other words, it is best to leave the door open at least once a day for at least 15 minutes so that the air can be completely exchanged.

Old garage owners who want to solve the condensation problem permanently have the option of using an upcoming garage renovation to have modern ventilation systems installed, such as those offered by companies like ZAPF for retrofitting. There are several options:
