Prefabricated garages offer more than just space for cars.
A secure parking space for your car – that is the main function of a prefabricated garage. In addition, the garage should increasingly also provide storage space. This trend is being reinforced because new homes often no longer have basements for cost reasons.
Prefabricated garages are growing in width and length, and this is not only due to the fact that many car models are getting bigger and bigger. “A garage should not only house the vehicle, but also offer additional storage space – most garage customers attach great importance to this nowadays,” says Markus Hölzl, Head of Marketing at ZAPF GmbH, the prefabricated garage manufacturer based in Upper Franconia. “Because in addition to the car, garage owners usually also want to store car accessories such as winter or summer tires as well as bicycles, garden tools or sports equipment.” According to the garage expert, one reason for this is that many new homes today are built without basements, which may not necessarily mean that living space is lost, but certainly storage space. This can be partially compensated for with a larger garage.
Garage manufacturers have long since responded to this trend. For example, ZAPF offers large garages with a width of up to 7 m and a length of up to 9 m. “Two cars can be parked in them and there is still enough space to store other items,” explains Hölzl.
For large garages with a length of 9 m in particular, it is also possible to create two separate rooms with a recessed wall, a “parking room” and a “storage room”, so to speak. But there are also options for additional space in standard garages: a ready-made extension with an area of 3 x 3 m can be installed. “This is ideal as a storage area, for example for garden or sports equipment,” says Hölzl.
A prefabricated garage with plenty of space also makes sense for all DIY enthusiasts and hobby craftsmen, as tools, workbenches and the like can also be stored in a garage. “If the garage is also to be used as a workshop and hobby room, an electrical installation ex works is also recommended,” advises the ZAPF expert. “An additional side window or side door can also be installed.”
But it’s not just the inside of the garage that can be used for more than just parking the car. The roof also offers potential: “On site, it is of course possible to put a roof structure with a pitched roof on the prefabricated garage, which creates additional space,” says Hölzl. The only requirement is that the statics are adjusted accordingly when the garage is being built.
