Not all rust (on garages) is the same

As garages get older, some of the metal parts installed in them can start to rust. Even the best rust protection cannot always prevent this. In most cases, this is superficial edge rust or small, rather inconspicuous rust spots. Nevertheless, laypeople ask themselves the question: is this dangerous – or when is it dangerous?

Crucial: Which parts of the garage are affected by rust and to what extent?

In fact, there are different types of rust, which should also be “treated” differently. Experts can quickly see how urgently and how rusty areas should be renovated. Laymen, on the other hand, find it difficult to recognize directly what needs to be renovated and/or replaced. Important to know: In certain individual cases, rust can even pose a risk of injury.

Danger from rust on the garage

If, for example, the tracks or springs (for up-and-over doors) of the garage door are severely affected by rust (rust penetration or structural rust areas), there is always a need for action. This is because it is then possible that the tracks or door springs may break or tear if they are so badly affected by rust and thus become a source of danger. These areas should therefore be checked regularly over the years and replaced immediately in the event of severe rust.

“Minor” garage damage due to rust – what to do?

The situation is different, for example, in the case of flash rust on a swing gate edge and similar minor rust defects. Such areas can often be treated visually without structural intervention. The decisive factor is that the function is ensured: for example, does the door still close correctly? The restoration work differs depending on how badly the rust is actually affected. If the door is heavily rusted, the modernization experts at ZAPF often recommend replacing the door. This is not only safer – it also enhances the appearance of the garage. After all, the more conservative up-and-over door can perhaps be replaced with a modern sectional door at the same time – possibly even with the highly functional premium sectional door.
