What should I know before renovating my garage?

Just getting started is actually not such a good idea …

Typical triggers for the renovation of a garage are usually damp, black mildew stains on the ceiling or break-outs on the floor or walls … Because these very obvious signs of ageing damage to a garage are particularly eye-catching. The sticking point here is that some laymen tend to only repair (or have repaired) this obvious damage – but it usually makes much more sense to think through a necessary renovation well in advance and to consider whether this renovation should not also be combined with a modernization of the garage.

So what questions should you think through before renovating your garage?

The following four questions are particularly relevant:

  • Should the possibly leaking flat garage roof simply be recoated (which is possible) – or does a shed roof extension make sense? This may be a little more expensive, but it is durable – and also looks particularly good.
  • Should the rusty, old up-and-over door just be repaired or replaced with a new up-and-over door – or would it not be smarter to have a slightly more expensive sectional door installed straight away? This not only looks very aesthetically pleasing – it also creates more usable interior space and also allows the garage door to be opened and closed even when another car is parked directly in front of it (because the sectional door does not have to swing open). Perhaps even a premium garage door would be a clever feature, as it allows the garage to be ventilated in such a way that the door itself remains closed (by tilting only the top sectional element of the door).
  • Should the old garage continue to be opened manually – or wouldn’t it be nice (especially in rain, snow or in the dark) to have an electric door opener installed and be able to open the garage door in future by remote control or (with the ZAPF Connect “package”) even completely smartly by app?
  • Does it make sense to have light not only in the garage, but possibly also in the approach area in front of the garage? This would be possible with the ZAPF Doorlight, which can also be retrofitted to old garages (provided there is a power connection) – and would also emphasize the modern look of the garage.
